As a fantasy/sci-fi writer I spend a great deal of time focusing on another world and conjuring up the lives of humanoid creatures. I read blogs daily where other people spend their time in a similar fashion but with fairies, ghosts, shape-shifters, vampires, zombies or other “pretend” creatures. Gene Lempp has a fascinating spot on his blog which often highlights unusual creatures called Designing from Bones. There are some creatures there that are very interesting.
A good writer knows that all fantasy is based on reality. We take our fantasies and research realities so that they sit better with our readers. As with most writers when researching a book these days I turn to google for my information. As I was researching for my NaNoWriMo novel I came across many convincing posts out there arguing that we are not alone in this universe and to be honest just as many arguing that we are. My creative mind decided to take a moment and focus on the idea of aliens being real though. It was fun. These are some of the questions I wondered about. Please feel free to answer them as well. It would be great to get a creative discussion going.
Imagine if they really did help build pyramids and had really visited our ancient ancestors like the Altlanteans?
What if they really do build some of those crop circles that turn up so perfectly formed in just one night?
Could it be that they are really out there or even look like us and are here on earth? What if they are just waiting until the human mindset is ready to accept them before they reappear? How do you think they would be received? What if the other “fantasy” creatures were real too?
I am convinced that it’s arrogant to think we know everything about the universe or to dismiss stuff because it seems to weird or unlikely. There’s just too much we don’t know about the world. I don’t think it hurts to keep a slightly open mind.
What do you mean “what if”?
Although I’m quite ambivalent about aliens. Not that I don’t think it’s likely that there’s some other intelligent species out there, more that it’s irrelevant. Seriously. It’s like talking to a group of honey ants in South America and telling them there’s a secret colony of green ants in Europe.
I have mixed feelings about most creatures – faeries, dragons and aliens. I want them to be real because that would just be so amazing but I also have not seen any up close and personal. It would be so cool to fly on the back of a pegasus though!
I love playing with creatures in my mind. Shifting them around, trying to find ways to make them more real, placing them in any and every location I can imagine. They are as real as our thoughts, but yeah, it would be great to have a miniature pet dragon. Just sayin’
