Fearsome Friday – Xenophobia

Xenophobia

The unreasonable fear of foreigners or strangers which also includes the fear of things that are strange or foreign. Xenophobia can often times lead to racism but the hatred element of racism is caused by the fear itself. Examples of mass groups exhibiting symptoms of xenophobia include the colonists reaction towards the natives already living in Americas when they arrived there. History has shown how political involvement can lead to mass xenophobia such as that towards certain Europeans occurring around the time of WWI, WWII and the holocaust. Again experienced towards African Americans particularly before the 1960s. Most recently towards certain Muslim communities.

Xenophobia and its induced racism has been the basis for many novels.

What novels do you recommend that deal with xenophobia?
